As a resident... I would probably say the one place to not miss would be the view from the Pali Lookout... the one best beach, with the best views, fewest people, and nicest water would be Lanikai Beach, in Kailua.

Climb Diamond Head, gaze over the Pali Lookout, try surfing (but not on the North Shore during the winter unless you really know what you're doing) and sip a Mai Tai while at the beach in Waikiki. I would say take a pass on the Dole Plantation or on any Roberts Hawaii tour. Also beware of the timeshare-hawking sharks in Waikiki trying to pose as jolly folk offering you a free Hawaiian floorshow.

Go to the North shore area for sure! find the Skydiving and glider rides. Awesome! Of course you have to take in the Pearl Harbor tour. Rent a car and head up the coast. There is a beach old volcano, you have to pay to get in, but you can snorkel, way cool! Keep an eye on your stuff, it'll get stolen! Why? I don't know, but the snorkeling stuff is the first to go, even some signs that suggest the same. Another beach is called Wimea (sp), if you go in the winter or close to Christmas you'll see 10-20ft waves, if your from the Midwest like me, you'll freak! I had airline miles and got first class there and back, very comfortable. Had marriage ceremony there right on beach. Have fun!

hanauma bay, the north shore, dole pineapple plantation. The best shrimp is at Giovanni's shrimp truck on the north shore and then drive down the street to Matsumoto for shave ice. If you go to Pearl Harbor, go early. The flea market is Wednesday and Saturday at Aloha stadium. Hanauma bay is closed Tuesday.

If you happen to be there over a Sunday, don't miss the flea market at the Aloha Stadium. It has all the typical souvineers for WAY less than anywhere else.
