It provides information about what is going on in America and around the world, that helps people form their opinions. Some media sources are offering this information without bias, most notably PBS and NPR, however most have a bias. Some people think this a bad thing, I on the other hand like to get my information from a variety of sources so that I can form an informed opinion.

Not just in America, but world wide, the news media can dramatically change the landscape of politics and of policy making.
On December 7th, 1941 the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Had the news media not covered that story as it did, do you suppose that President Roosevelt would have been able to get a declaration of war so easily from a congress that was hell bent on keeping us out of a war and maintaining a isolationist policy?
Had the news media not covered the American involvement as it did in Vietnam -- showing people getting shot and blown up almost live during the evening news -- before Washington had a chance to officially notify families of loved one, do you suppose that war would have ended differently?
So now look at the media of today. After 9/11, America was in a state of shock. First we went to war in Afghanistan. A short time later, after diplomacy had failed in the U.N. and Iraq, we went to war there as well. Americans were waving their little flags and mounting them on their cars. As time went on, people began to forget what it was REALLY all about and before too long, a group of politicians in Washington started complaining that they felt they'd been lied to. Everyone has forgotten all about the war in Afghanistan and no one remembers that the U.N. was busted for taking bribes in the Food For Oil Program.
One hundred years ago, a man named Marx made a comment that "Religion is the opiate for the masses." He was pushing an agenda of his new theory on Communism. That the working class couldn't afford to get stoned on opium and forget about the troubles of the day, so they turned towards religion. Communism all but failed. Still that quote is hanging on. I submit to you that today's opiate of the masses is TV. You come home from work or school and want to forget about your life for a while. You turn on the tube. It tells you when to laugh and when to cry. You don't have to think any more, you just get absorbed and before you know it, you mind goes numb.
The music you listen to. Who decides what is "Good?" Is it someone with a degree in music appreciation? Someone who knows quality from trash? Who chooses what get's air time on the radio? Talent scouts, do they REALLY know talent? Watch the video High School Musical. It's all the rage with the young kids today. Why? It's lame, the charcaters are all paper thin and the musical score is attrocious. Answer. Media
It determines the clothes you wear, the music you listen to, what is "Sexy" and what is entertaining. It's a political tool and a weapon. It's advertising, it's marketing "Christmas."
Hope this rambling helps give you some directions to run. Good luck.

Well America isnt "all media". We do have a lot of media influence though, here in America. I mean look at this list.........
tv-media
magazines-media
newspapers-of course media
internet-media
paparazzi-media
Media is everywhere, your going to see it everywhere you go. The media can have good and bad influences on people. It all depends on the choices you make though, whether your going to do what the media tells you(conform), or not (non-conformist). Again its all based on what you do, and how you decide to deal. Hope I helped you out.

Because the media puts a spin on everything and most people believe it all without doing the research themselves and therefore repeating the BS to others.

Well, there is a big difference between being affected by media and being defined by it.
