I have read it in several books about the past and also in old newspaper clippings. I imagine it to be something similar to tuberculosis, but really I have no idea.

It is tuberculosis. People used to call it comsumption, b/c after suffering with it for a few years, people would waste away and become very weak and thin, as though they were being 'consumed' by the disease. In addition to affecting the lungs (the most obvious symptom) it also impacts the digestive system so people with it can become emaciated.

Yes, TB. I work in a health department and we track it in the community. It use to be a very fatal disease but now there are medications to treat it.

It is tubercolosis. It's an archaic name for the disease.
