I'ts not an insult.. exactly, it could be like when you say "this is ****** up"... the litteraly translation doesn't work...but if the person said something like "tu puta madre", he is calling the person's mom a sl.ut.

P.uta Madre is used as slang by a lot of people and they don't mean to be disrespectful towards someone; it's used when something goes wrong, you are upset, or annoyed, "p.uta madre...this is ******* up or ***** it" but if someone says to you, "tu p.uta madre" then it's personal.
