Fear keeps us inline with what we think we should be doing. If God wanted us to fear outright, we would be no more than robots. The question is good with a lot of possible answers - do people trust themselves enough to live like God would want them to? Or, is it the fear of God or the fear of ourselves?
God trusts us to do what is right, and what's right is usually full of greyness. Yes or no? In other words, God=Love, Religion=Fear - and we are stuck in between.

Well obviously, because many people don't fear God, and live "good & just lives" However, that proves nothing. You have a conscience no matter what you think about God, that you're just as much a slave to as anyone else. Truth is the key ingredient to the success of this religion. Pithy sayings and logical fallacies are the key ingredients to atheism.

I do not Fear the Lord. My reasons for living a moral and just life are because I want to experience the utmost God has to offer me after I pass.

Call me selfish, but I don't want to have gone through all this "hell on earth" and not receive the ultimate gift at the end.

Fear can never be equated with respect. Respect means admiration for the greatness of something, not respect out of fear. Respect out of fear is intimidation. At the point of a gun, one's fear may make one do anything, but that is not respect. Like all animals, the human emotion of fear is nothing more than repressed anger.

I think they fear most for their own guarantee of eternal life. They've created a philosphy where they can sin, repent and sin all over again, ad infinitum.

Some people are basically good, some are basically bad. Religion isn't going to change either type significantly.

Every day is such a gift - why would anybody resent being alive? Believers live in fear because they are evil: the misery and constant disappointment is nature trying to reason with them. But they won't listen.

Are you talking about a specific religion?
The religion I follow is based on loving God, not fearing him.
God possesses only good qualities, there is nothing to fear.

Fear in cotext of God and the Bible means to respect. To understand that God has the power to let you walk into Heaven or toss you in the lake of fire.

To paraphrase a Nobel Laureate Steven Weinberg..

"Good people do good things and bad people do bad things. But for good people to do bad things, that takes religion."
