How similar is the spanish language to portugese?

Spanish and Portuguese are quite similar as a matter of reading but they have VERY different pronounciation.I study Spanish since 3 years, I can read Portuguese but I can't really understand it when it's spoken.(my mother tongue is Italian)Well,if the person who's speaking portuguese speaks clearly and slowly , I can understand the sense of the sentence.

Yes they are very similiar. But they are also similar to Italian and French...all being 'romance' languages derived from Latin. But, not everything is the same. In fact much of Portuguese can be likened to some French as well in that some words are not like Spanish. It's easy though to understand Portuguese once you learn Spanish. Spanish is easiest of all languages mentioned. Even if you don't know what the words mean, as long as you know how to pronounce the alphabet you can pronounce any word. From there, it's easy to learn the other languages too.

Middle Spanish and Middle Portuguese were dialects of Middle Spanish.

Portuguese from Portugal is very similar to Spanish from Spain, both written, and by auditory comprehension -- especially if one has a background in Latin, or other Latinate languages (French, Italian, Provençale, Catalàn, Romanian, Romany, Romansh, Sicilian, etc...).

BRAZILIAN Portugueses is pronounced wildly differently from Iberian Portuguese. Central and South American Spanish is pronounced quite differently from Iberian Spanish. READING is still quite similar.

They are similar enough so that a Spanish person and a Portuguese person can have a conversation and understand each other.
But there are many different words and the pronunciation is very different.

Very similar. I've never studied Portuguese but I'm learning Spanish and I can read and understand a lot of Portuguese.

i speak spanish, and yeah, portuguese are very very similar
in a conversation with a portuguese or brasilian, i understand the basics ideas...
then maybe be the italian..
and then french

as i saw it, i think spanish language is similar to:
portuguese 70%
italian 50%
french 25%

native portuguese speakers can understand any spanish written text. listening comprhension requires some getting used to it due to the pronunciation differeces. one could come understand over 97% of what is said without prior language study.

A un portugues es facil entender el español,pero a alguien que hable el español es dificil entender el portugues ....pero si, el español es muy similar al portugues igual que al italiano....
