Like if you have a house and they want to build a road that would go straight though your living room. Is there anything that you can do about that?

Start looking at realty ads. Yes the can. But in most cases, they will give you what "they" determine is a fair price (usually about 75% of market value).

No, there's nothing that can be done about it. It's called "imminent domain." The best thing to do is settle in the early stages, then you'll be able to negotiate on the price of your property a bit. If you wait until the last minute when they come to forcibly take the property, then you'll have to settle for whatever offer they make. And they do have to provide SOME type of payment for the property.

It's called eminent domain, by law they can do it if it benefits the public. I think that sucks, happened to someone's godparents and the money they got was pitiful.
