In a heated argument w/ the man, I threatened to burn down his house. I think I scare him sometimes and he took me seriously. What can I do to make him believe me when I say I was just kidding?

The thing is you weren't kidding. Kidding is intended as a joke from the onset, like telling a guy "nice shirt, do they sell men's clothes where you bought that?".

Threatening to burn someone's house down in an argument is a loss of control. You need to pick up some anger management skills.

I suspect your anger has arisen before because he took you seriously. If you just make idle threats all the time, this wouldn't be an issue.

Quit rationalizing your behavior and trying to explain it away. You need to figure out what's going on in your own mind.

Please don't come here and kick my ***...

Wanglvr, the first thing you need to do is promise never to ever kid anyone with things like that. You are lucky you did not end up in jail. Just be nice and be yourself and when you kid around, use a subject that will not threaten the man.

To late Pal, if you said this in front of witnesses and he called the cops then sit back and relax, they'll be knocking soon, I'm sure. If someone threatened me I would not only call the cops I would press charges.

You better get your story straight and be ready to make a lot of apologies, man like eat s... if you have to but be ready or your dead meat

You WEREN'T kidding. No one makes jokes in an argument. Tell him that you were angry and that you would never actually do it. You did cross a line here, and telling him you were kidding is a lie.

Threatening physical harm to him or his possessions definately is crossing a line. Apologize, reassure him that you obviously weren't thinking about what you were saying, and next time, fight clean.

Umm... I'm pretty sure you backflipped over the line, and then did a headstand on it.

If he thinks you're serious, and you're not, then I think you two probably have more issues with each other than this little arguement.

Yes, you crossed the line. Won't be so funny when he calls the cops on you, so learn to control your temper and keep your mouth zipped.
