I've had my older chihuahua for about 4 years now and I recently bought a new baby chihuahua (3 weeks ago) about 3 months old. The both of them always bark, and growl at each other and im afraid they may never get a long. What can I do so they can get a long?

You have to let them establish their social order. There will always be an Alpha. Things you can do to foster this are always feeding the older one first (even though you feed them at the same time, just give the older one the food first). Dogs are not diplomatic like people - they are happy once they know what their place is - their egos are blessedly limited. Normally you should let the older dog, or dog you first had be the alpha but you shouldn't do anything overt about it. Pet them both, love them both, scold them both and they will work it out in time.

Hi. It is probably a little late now. When you get a new dog to be introduced into your family that already has a dog, you should introduce the dogs in a spot away from your house on neutral territory until they get along. When you bring a dog into your home, it's only natural for your first dog to be territory, especially if it's a one person type of dog like chihuahua.

The good news is, it will take some time and some work but they should be able to get used to each other.

I bought a 3 month old sharpei and have a 9 yr old sharpei. My older girl hates my new little rambunctios boy. Desipises him. But she is tolerating him and they do live and stay together. Lot's of growling and barking to get him away from her. He has learned at this point, when to stop. It's been 2 months and the little one knows his place now. They even sleep next to each other. And when I give them treats, the little one drops his for the older one and waits for his. So, over time..it will work. Just give both equal attention and praise the older dog when he is tolerating the puppy.

Good luck. Try to give equal attention. Praise and give reward treats to your older dog when he/she is not barking and growling at the little one. So the older one learns that when he/she behaves and tolerates the new dog, he/she gets treats.

One more important thing, you HAVE to protect the puppy at all times from your older dog. Do not assume nothing will happen if you leave them alone when you leave your home. Until your older dog learns to tolerate the puppy you cannot leave them together when you go out or you could find the puppy hurt or worse dead when you return. Dogs are territorial and very protective. Good luck!!!!

I have two Chihuahua's also but they both came from the same litter. Well in your case i would just give it time! The one chihuahua you had for four years, it was known as his house that is just how animals are! When he growls at the puppy is his way of telling him this is my house! Just give it some time and they will be the best of friends!

Well, it's a game of whose boss They will eventually work things out. They could become friends and at the very least tolerate each other.3 months and the new member will be incorporated in the pack. Have a nice holiday.

Yes they will deffinatly get along. Its just the fact there is another dog. Thats why. Their not mad. Their overhelmed and excited to see another dog. When the younger one grows older it will learn a little more and they will be the bestest friends.

Are they both the same sex? Dogs of the same sex particularly two females are notorious for not getting along. If this is the case they may never get along.

Whether they get along is really out of your hands. You can't make a dog like another dog, anymore than you can make a person like another person.
