Whatever you do don't got to a little place in the mall like Claire's and have them do it. They use a gun. A gun should never be used on cartilage because it crushes it. Go to a shop that specializes in piercings and they will do a much better job on it. Its what they do for a living after all. And its less damaging to your ear. The needle will also hurt much less and there is less of a chance for you to develop keloids.

Some doctors do body piercing, you'd have to call and ask though; and keep in mind that it's going to be rather expensive, no insurance company will cover the cost of an ear piercing. They may not even cover the cost of the visit unless you go for another reason. But you are very right to be concerned about mall and jewelry store piercings. They pierce with piercing guns which are a biohazard nightmare. Those little plastic, sometimes part metal guns CANNOT be sterilized. Many of these places use a old gun design with offers no disposable parts at all, so the client's ear is coming into contact with materials that've touched other client's ears, and bodily fluids. The only stanitation performed is an alcohol swab, and those don't kill dangerous viral infections like Hepatitis C. In fact there are documented cases of Hep C transmission by those older style piercing guns. There are also newer guns available, which offer partial or complete disposable parts. Which is better in theory, but not in practice because the clerk who operate them aren't trained and don't know how to prevent cross contamination. This is a problem because ear piercing guns are blunt force trauma wounds (which btw causes longer more complicated healing periods) and blunt force trauma causes something called arterial spray. Arterial spray is is a fine mist spray of blood and other bodily fluids that expels from the wounds, as the trauma is taking place. This spray can easily cover everything within a couple feet of the piercing area. This means that even if the gun itself is completely disposable, that if the clerk touches anything at all in that area, like say a pen to mark your kid's ears, or god forbid she'd set the gun on the counter while marking the ears or gloving up your child could easily be exposed to any blood born pathogens the previous customer may have had. I seriously hope those facts have completely convinced you not to go to one of those places. So what's a mom to do if she wants her child pierced for a reasonable price? Fear not! For there is another option. Professional body piercing shops. I know that sounds scary, but if the shop is reputable, there procedures are completely sterile, start to finish. Brand new needles, new tools, the piercers know how to prevent cross contamination and re-glove any time the touch anything but the client or the sterile materia, even then if it posses a contamination risk. Plus needle piercing are actually less painful and tend to heal quicker and with fewer complications. Check out a few. Ask to see examples of their work (they should have portfolios on hand) their certifications (not all states require body piercing licenses, but they should be certified in prevention of blood born pathogens, universal precautions, CPR, and first aid at least), and also ask to see their most recent autoclave spore test. If they have all of these things, and they're up to date, that shop should be pretty safe for your daughter. The only issue you may run into is age. If your daughter is an infant, no piercing shop will touch her. But if she's say, 7 or 8, unless it's prohibited by law, most reputable piercers won't have a problem just piercing her earlobes. For earlobes, it'll run somewhere between $30 and $50, that's really not that expensive. If you can't find one who will, and you can't find a doctor who does piercings, please just wait until she's old enough to have it done. Piercing guns are not worth it.

My cartlidge didnt hurt at all getting pierced..afterwards was painful. Just make sure not to lay on that ear. Also, keep it clean and like alot of people have said try ice. I actually changed my stud earring into a hoop..my friend did the same thing and it healed alot faster and alittle less painful.

I dont know how to ease the pain but I can tell you you should get it done at a piercing/ tatto place instead of them ear piercing place cause tattoo place will use a needle to pierce you which aint as bad but an ear piercing place will pierce you with the earing and force the hole in your ear.

it doesn't really hurt that bad, it is just like getting the bottom done. if it swells a little you can take advil or motrin for that. take two 45 minutes before you go in, and if it stings put a cold compress on it. don't use actual ice because that will make it worse once you take it off.
