All darn day......And then you can only go to the base. After 911 you have to go through a bunch of security. They have a great cruise that goes around the Statue and goes to Ellis Island, you can still get great pictures. If I could do it over I would do that.

It takes several hours. Buy a ferry ticket, which will take you to both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and back. The Statue of Liberty doesn't take that long to tour, and it's true you can only go in the base. (Tours up the staircase inside Lady Liberty stopped some time in the 1920s.) What's so time-consuming there are the long lines and the security checks, so be prepared for that. Ellis Island takes longer, if you want to really look at all the exhibits. They have computer kiosks there where you can look up the name of a family member who came through Ellis Island, which is interesting.

Get there early or buy tickets on line to avoid a LONG wait. I went this past summer and I allowed four hours, but only took about 2 and 1/2. Have fun.
