Actually, they are two different things really.
To "wait another day" is to wait for a specified period of time which in this case, is "one more day" from now.
To "wait for another day" is to wait, (implies hoping), FOR something which in this case is "another day" as in "another chance". That "another day" may be tomorrow or it may be a few days later.

They are implying different things. "Wait another day" is like saying "Wait one more day" while ""Wait for another day implies "Something will be done another day besides today".
