If not done correctly, you can rupture the anal glands. If your dog needs to have this done, your vet will be more than willing to show you the correct way to do it.
If the dog is not having anal gland problems, then you do not have to do it.

My 6 year old dog, has to go every month and get hers expressed. There is a way for you, the owner to do it, but I was always afraid I would hurt my dog. Plus I really didn't like the idea, sounds too gross for me. Some dogs only have to have it done once and awhile, if there is a problem. But some like my dog, have to have it drained every month or worse, every other week. Otherwise she strains to go to the bathroom and scoots around the house. By gently pressuring at the upper left and right area away from the anus in a Y shaped pattern in a 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock pattern. Your vet will be glad to show you how.

with thumb and finger on either side of the anus (1 " out)
massage toward the anus several times
then clean with a wet washcloth
dry with a paper towel - dispose of both

and keep the dog!
