I think God, and deities in general are becoming a thing of the past. Think of the reasons why gods existed in the first place. Often people attributed things they couldn't explain (ex. night/day - Apollo and his chariot) to god like beings.

Also, because it's a method of controlling social order. Since people don't want to have murder, adultery, theft etc as part of general life, they instituted a set of sins, and came up with a punishment that was fairly good at deterring people. An everlasting hell for committing a sin? Yeah, I'd say that's a good way to encourage people not to do it.

Churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, sacred grounds, etc are also places where people can come together and have something in common. A lot of small communities still rely heavily on the church for their social activities. Larger urban centres don't because there are more faiths represented.

Also, it's hard to believe that God has a "plan" and that He/She/It is benevolent. When your cousin, age 30, mother of four young children is killed in a freak boating accident, it's kind of hard to believe in a God that would allow that to happen.

Society has become more materialistic and arrogant. It's a lot more "all about me" and not about the greater good. Thus the rising crime rate and lower church attendance.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge church supporter... in fact I'm fairly anti-organized religion.. but I think churches had their place and given the advancements in science, sociological studies, and the rise of mercantilism, churches, and even the basic belief in a higher power, has drifted away.

Maybe that's as it should be... maybe we have to realize that we need to make good choices for ourselves and not to avoid damnation. With luck the world will wake up and realize that maybe there isn't anything out there and we have to take responsibility for ourselves. If there is a deity, perhaps that's what free will is all about after all.

The majority of people believe in some god, but there's no majority in the world as to a particular god. And some of us see no reason to believe at all. Why? Lack of evidence.

The majority of people don't believe in God? Where on earth are you?

Actually the majority do believe in God. It is just the fact that those who don't are shoving so hard in the other direction that the status quo has been shaken and stirred so to speak. Christians are fast losing their rights in the name of being PC and going along with what is the "in thing" today in their quest to look "new and exciting" to potential converts. However, my God is the same today as He was yesterday and will be tomorrow.

The majority of people in advanced countries don't believe in god because knowledge and education have shown it to be a ridiculous concept.

But in backward countries there is still a majority who believe in this sort of mumbo jumbo.

In today's society, surely with so much scientific proof of our past, and with so much bigotry and hate, most of which is caused by religion, I am surprised that so many people do still believe in a God. I believe that many people, especially the older generation, had it drummed into them as youngsters, and now use church as a meeting place so they are not lonely. This seems to be especially true of "happy clappy" churches, which seem to be more of a social event. The people who "run" religion are after one thing....MONEY. Wake up!!

I think that many of the 90% of people who supposedly believe in god do so because they are too scared not to. It doesn't mean that they have considered the evidence and reasoned for themselves. They're like Man Utd supporters - they do it because it seems the popular thing to do.
