Just moved to West Lafayette from Northern California and I am dying for culture, in particular the classic arts.

Is the Indianapolis Symphony any good? How about the Indianopolis Opera? I heard that the Ballet Internationale in Indianapolis went under. Is the city's cultural landscape THAT bad? Please say it isn't so. Please don't tell me that I have to drive 2 hours to Chicago!

Any advice I where to go in west-central Indiana for culture would be welcome.

you can go to the IRT..they have a lot of great productions there. I've been to a few and they were great. Also, the symphony orchestra is great. I know people with season tickets and they love it. The Eiteljorg has a lot of stuff, too. There is a calendar that comes out every year that has everything for the year listed in it. You might get one of those. You see, there is culture you just have to find it.

Indianapolis Philharmonic Orch
Indiana Rep. Theatre (In Indy)

You need to drive South to Indianapolis to get any culture, I would say. But, if you want art museums, you will have to go to Chicago I would say. The Purdue school is more "scientific" in my opinion and lacks the culture you are looking for.

In Indy, they hold many speakers, too, at the multiple universities here in town (IUPUI, Marion, UofI, Butler) Butler is well known for having good speakers.

I would check the IRT and universities out!

Yes, the ISO is outstanding. I don't know much about the Lafayette area, but there are plenty of things to do in Indy. I've listed a few links below to get you started.

Well, you could go to Fort Wayne. They have a philharmonic orchestra (the Christmas concert was beautiful), a ballet, theater/musical productions, etc.
Check it out, you might be surprised.

You're kinda screwed in West Laf. You could travel about 2 hours north to Fort Wayne, or south to Indy to get your culture 'fix'. I'm sure if you poke and pry, you might find something to appease you in West Laf.
