Sometimes dogs will roll in the grass or in something smelly right after getting a bath. Some dog shampoos have perfumes that may be pleasant to humans but smell awful to the animal. It is just an effort to mask the unpleasant and un-dog-like odor.

Wolves will often roll in decomposing carcasses or the feces of plant eating animals or herbivores. This would mask their own scent and enable them to sneak up on their prey without detection. It could even fool members of the other species into accepting it as one of their own. This ancient instinct may have carried over to domesticated dogs.

Another school for thought is that dogs may roll in smelly things to 'advertise' what they have found to other dogs.

certain, all yet 6 or 7 dogs foodstuff organizations use useless animals of their foodstuff. not ck, pork, lamb, etc. i'm talking about actually scraping highway kill(which include dogs and cats), different rendered pets, euthanized pets from vet workplaces, cancerous tissue, what do you imagine they do with the diseased parts they reduce off the beef they feed us? The USDA sends the not worthy meat to puppy foodstuff organizations. They cover it lower than different animal meal, i.e. lamb meal, etc. They use a small quantity of suggested animal, and use the rendered tissue as filler. each and anybody thinks their puppy foodstuff doesn't include this, yet like i suggested, ninety 5% do, and the 5% that do not you gained't somewhat discover, petsmart and petco do not carry them-in any respect.

Well-known trainer Patricia McConnell has a theory that dogs roll in dead stuff as a sort of status symbol to show off that they live in a "high rent neighborhood" with an abundance of good dead stuff, and that all that stinky smell is doggie bling-bling.

Because they are dogs and that is what they do. Why does there have to be a reason?
