It really does vary from person to person, it is painful but then we each have our own threshold of pain... if it is really all bad why do we do it over again? :o)

It depends upon the person. There is no way to know how "bad" it will be for you until it happens! I had back labor and it was excruciating. A co-worker didn't feel any pain at all, just like she was taking "a really big dump". Others were in the middle (lucky me, huh?).
If you are worried, try not to think about it. Prepare yourself as best as you can with what works for you (music, a helpful friend/partner, books, breathing, etc) and just rest assured that it is usually less than one day of your life and the baby will absolutely make up for it. Also, labor varies within the whole cycle, so the worst part isn't much of the overall time frame.
When "people" say...do they cry? Give you looks of terror? Start shaking in fear? Probably not. See? You'll be OK just like all of the rest us! So OK in fact that a great deal go on to repeat the experience more than once!

Having a toothache is worse than giving birth. Giving birth does hurt and it is embarrassing. It's just about the only time you're going to pee, poop and fart in front of a bunch of strangers. I went natural with my first and chose to have an epidural with my second. I think everyone should have natural once otherwise they can't say how bad giving birth was. With the epidural, I experienced a cramping sensation in my butt. Before I knew it the baby was here. Getting the epidural was worse than the birthing part. Either way, the pain experienced during labor and the birthing process will soon be forgotten the moment you lay your eyes upon the most beautiful face you will ever see in your life.

I have a 7 month old and the pain was unbearable, I did it drug free, wanted an epidural but by the time anesthesia got there, I was pushing. The contractions hurt like a son of a gun but I felt some relief when I was able to push. Is it worth it? OF COURSE. Will I do it again? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!!! It doesn't matter what everyone tells you, you will never imagine what it feels like until you do it yourself. Everyone experiences birth differently and each experience is unique.

Giving birth is wonderful and exhilarating. It can also be painful and grueling. And once you have given birth in a hospital, there is little to be shy about, because they have seen it all.
That said, consider strongly using a epidural or other anesthesia, if appropriate. Ask your Doc about your options. Have someone there (the dad) to support you. And enjoy the product of your Labors (pun intended).

I had a terrible birth for my daughter. Am preg again. Someone asked me if I was scared. I said 'no, the birth part is so short term, the hardest part for me is the 9 months of pregnancy.' and that is true. if you can manage 9 months of the crap that pregnancy does to your body and hormones, labour will be fine. It is less then a day. And when you hold that little one, your eyes will fill with tears and you'll be all 'pain? what pain?'

~Some people make it sound worse than it really is. Giving birth is a natural thing. You're lucky, it's more acceptable to have epidurals now.
Try having it naturally though. Back labor and induced labor make it difficult, painful.
You'll be alright, don't freak yourself out before it even happens.
Congrats on the baby to be.~

It is different for every person. My labors and deliveries were very easy and fast. I know that it is not like that for everyone. One of our daughters gave birth to two of our grandchildren at home - her husband delivered the second one because the midwife didn't make in on time - and she had easy deliveries. another of our daughters has had two more difficult deliveries.
The good thing is that it is not going to last forever, it will finish, you will forget about it very quickly, and the end product is delightful!

Hell no. For me contractions lasted 10 minutes and were a bit like period pains and the actual pushing lasted 15 minutes. Gas and air is amazing, it makes you happy and painfree as long as you concentrate on pushing the baby out its fine. Most people I talked to when I was pregnant say they can't really remember their labour much (probably cas they were so drugged up,lol)

No! It's an experience you can never forget because it's wonderful not because it's painful. It feels like extremely bad period cramps until you get pain medicine and then you can't usually feel it. My epidoral wore off in one spot and they couldn't get that one spot numb again so I felt the whole thing through that one spot and let me tell you I had tears coming down my face because it hurt so bad, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

never having a baby myself i can tell you that I have been in the delivery room with a friend 2 different times, and I kid you not, before she had drugs but no epi. and she literally was calmly saying Ouch ouch that hurts...... my mom gave birth to 3 of us and no drugs no nothing..... pure determination and love. Another friend was in such pain I wanted to take her place. So it varies from woman to woman as does every part of pregnancy. I have have heard that if you stretch your thighs, hips and legs the during your pregnancy it will make giving birth easier.
Best of luck to you.
