No more than a pin-prick from the needle...it's like going to sleep.

if it is an injection, the dog doesn't feel pain, but there is another form of euthanasia the gas chamber) and that is extremely inhumane and painful. Sadly, the gas chamber is still used in many states. I'm sure many of you have heard of Quentin, the dog that survived the gas chamber. Even earlier this year, a dog in a Georgia shelter did not die during a routine gas chamber euthanasia. I recommend that you read some websites and news articles on the subject: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/04/0411_050411_peteuthanasia.html
There are many websites with information about the horrible, inhumane procedure of gas chamber euthanasia for animals.

Many dogs who are euthanized are already in great pain. I can't imagine the prick of the needle would hurt any more than that.

The only pain they should feel is the needle. The drug that is used is a barbituate anesthetic. Basically what happens is they become over - anesthetized to the point that the brain stops telling the heart to beat. The drug may still be used in human medicine for anesthesia - if you've ever been anesthetized and been told to count backward that is the same drug or very similar.
Sorry if your dealing with this decision. It's never easy no matter what.

Many dogs do...not all dogs are given an injection....
Many shelter dogs (and other unwanted dogs) are put into a kill box and gassed, which can take minutes and it's painful, and scarey.
Others are drowned in big drums of water, shot, starved, crushed...
So...depending on the method, some dogs DO feel pain.
We have a shelter here who gasses the animals...they fill a big "box" with as many dogs/puppies as possible, close the lid, pump it full of gas and wait for the screaming and terror to end.

Sadly, sometimes toy breeds and other small animals are euthanized this way because their veins are too small. I have not personally experienced this procedure, but have been told that one of my Pomeranians (if euthanasia is needed) will have to have it done that way. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Over the years, I've had to have many dear dogs put to sleep when their quality of life became too hard for them. I've held them in my arms and talked quietly to them, while the vet gave them a needle, and I've never felt one react at all to the needle. I don't think they felt it at all. They just slowly drifted into sleep while I held them, so they would know to the very last second how much I loved them
