I was on a plane today and see that for about $300, I can buy a 2-cd set of software that will teach me one of a number of languages. Does anyone have any opinion about this?

Rosetta Stone is very good in teaching language by immersion. It starts out by showing you pictures and giving you a word, then you choose which picture matches the word. You learn by trial and error, just like you would in real life.
In Kentucky, we can get Rosetta Stone for free through the library. You might check with your library to see if they have the same benefit. You have to go through the state library in Frankfort to do this, not the county library.

I say Russian, for the reason that that is what I'm finding out and I am in the beginning French and I best understand English and finding out Spanish. But Russian is an excessively fascinating language. Oh and I understand a little bit little bit of Italian, it is an handy language to study.

From what I've heard it's one of the best softwares to learn a new language. It's even used by the government and most international businesses.

Actually it really is. I used to be a Teacher Aide and I had a little mexican boy and girl who didnt know any english so when I went to the classroom I worked with them and we used that software and they did learn. So I would recommend it =)

It is excellent for modern languages that you are learning for a practical purpose, such as learning to speak them. (It is great for Spanish or French, for example.) It is not so great for dead languages however, like Latin, becuase their exercises are based mainly on vocally learning the material. My library offers it to all its patrons for free; check to see if your library does the same. They offer any language you can imagine.

not worth it. u can read a book from the library or borrow a cd. i know that one of the many languages are greek and hyrogliphics(don't know how to spell that).

I love it. I use it for Turkish and found it just as helpful as a class and even more so...no homework and I can go at my own pace!
