Since we seem to be assuming they like music and that you are asking about a musical and not a simple play...Phantom of the Opera is excellent HOWVER can sometimes scare newbies to the theater who have it in their head that "Opera" is boring. It is important to relise that Phantom of the Opera actually IS NOT classified as opera at all...it is, in fact, musical theater...however, since most view it as opera due to the operatic voices associated with it, it can sometimes frighten a newbie off. I would suggest something more on the upbeat...a comedy of some sort.

A Christmas Carol, because they will already know the basic story and they can see how that theater interprets it.
One year I took someone who didn't think she would like theater, and not only did she love it, but they had pro musicians do a carol singalong afterwards and she loved that, because she's a fan of karaoke.

Consider what kind of play the person would like. Drama? Musical? Comedy? And decide accordingly. No point in taking someone to the best play if he or she doesn't appreciate or like that genre. It's as simple as asking "Do you like watching plays"?

No particulars but start with something light and *short*. Benefits: probably less expensive for you if they don't like plays and want to walk. Encourage them to like plays if they're new to theater. Short if theater tries their patience; gives them a chance to walk out quickly. Light, not to stress their patience. Easy to discuss afterward.

Any comedy. Many people can't stand musicals, but most people like comedies. Arsenic and old lace is a good one.
The first play I saw was a comedy in London about a guy with two wives. I can't remember the name of it, but it was great.

It's probably a musical with a familiar story line and familiar music. Make it fun, not work to sit through the ptoduction. You certainly don't ewant4 to take a newbie to something by Tom Stppard or Shakespeare.

I think Wicked. It's the best play I have ever seen. Even though its 2 hours and 45 minutes.

If they are in town - try the Phantom of the Opera. Great show.. another good one is Les Miserables.
Both have plenty of action and you have to remind yourself you are actually seeing a play instead of watching a movie!
