Fear is completly in your mind, if you let fear control you it does. Remember fear is smaller then you it is inside of you, and so you are bigger. try meditations focusing your mind on nothing, by focusing on nothing you do not have fear in your mind. Do this by concentrating on a object that does not inspire fear or emotion and slowly make it disapear once it has disapeared let nothing enter your mind.

Yes, you can almost always take somebody with you. I've never been to a single lab where I wasn't allowed to bring a buddy, and believe me, I've been to at least 100.
Do you have an MP3 player or a cd player? Definitely tell the phlebotomist that you have a fear of needles, would like the smallest guage needle as possible (yes, they come in different sizes), and would they mind if you listened to your headphones while they did their work. Then close your eyes and breathe deep, and continue breathing deep until it's over with.
If you are prone to fainting (and be sure to tell them this), then stick around the lab for a while until you feel like you can move on with your day without passing out.
Despite all the bloodwork I've had done in my life, even I have passed out a couple times. In my defense I was very ill and the loss of blood was more than my body could handle.
Take some cookies and some juice, to revive your blood sugar, and whatever you do DO NOT WATCH THE BLOOD GOING INTO THE VIAL! Surest way to make yourself ill. Even a seasoned veteran like me can't do it.
Good luck!

I was terrified of needles until i now need monthly blood tests!
Here's what i did,
I had my husband - you can't stiffen the arm they take the blood from so squeeze someone elses hand, and look at them and breathe deep! If you hold your breath and you are someone prone to faint, breathing is the best thing for you!
Don't look at the needle, i hated the sight of blood, so i just looked away until they said all done!
Blood tests aren't as bad a some people think, they barely go under the surface of the skin, better than an immunization shot! If you get someone really good, they help you through it!
And always remember, the day will end and an hour after you get your test you'll feel pretty good about yourself for doing it!
Good Luck!

Think about it this way... blood tests only lasts about 30 seconds, and I have had many done, and none of them hurt at all. Take my word for it, the only way it will hurt is if you move around, and make the needle twist, so my advice is to just sit still close your eyes, and think of something that will keep your mind off of it.

I always look the other way when they are drawing blood and think of my favorite thing or something else that will keep my mind occupied.

First try to grow up, and when that doesn't work, yes, you can bring someone with you. Also remember it's a tiny object (compared to you) and it's going to be over in about 5 seconds (rediculously quick considering how many seconds the average person lives for). I used to be scared sh**less of needles until I got pregnant. You have to take so many blood tests and get so many shots you kind of get used to it. Then after child birth, a shot seems like cake.
