Use benzoyl peroxide this may be what he prescribed and if it is only use it once a day that might help.

I would stop using the medication he prescribed until I revisit the dermatologist. You said your face hurts and it isn't getting better. Although you should take into account the length of time you have been using the medication. All medicine doesn't work overnight, some takes time to see any results. However I don't what type of medication you are taking. Most acne medication does dry the skin out, the medicine is intended to dry out the oil impurities out of your pores. But if your face hurts then there may be some other promblem going on, that needs to be diagnosed by the dermatologist, or a possible allergic reaction.
Try using a mild facial cleansing soap like Basis. It's hypoallergenic and should be soothing to your skin. I would moisturize my skin with Palmer's Cocoa Butter Cream...don't use too much because it shines and is thick and creamy, but very smooth. Just put a thin layer on your face. Use very sparingly until you make it back to the dermatologist. Cocoa butter is soothing to chapped or bruised skin. I have used Palmer's Cocoa Butter Cream and it is the top gun...and has healing effects as well.
You also need to change your diet. As a teenager I had promblems with acne. My daughter had promblems with acne. And I'll tell you what I told her. Stay away from acids and soda pops..candy bars, potatoe chips, and greasy foods. You can eat those things but not too much. Getting eight glasses of water daily is key to healthy skin. I don't know how well you like fruits and vegetables...but these foods have a lot of healing properties as well, and also flush the system.

Go back and see the dermatologist and tell him what is going on. It could be a side effect to what your taking. Its trying to dry up the acne perhaps over board..
It could also be what the medication is suppose to do.. I wouldn't mess with any drug store remedies till you know what to put on your face.. you don't want to mess with it any more.
Especially if this med is helping, you may just mess with it.
I had a friend with really bad acne.. the stuff she put on her face made her face look worse before it got better..sad to say.

Stop using the cream if it hurts. You should do the gentle and safe way approach... by using a good oil free cleanser, toner, moisturiser day and night.
Try to exfoliate 3 times a week. And its also good to get a facial once a month to remove any impurties.
Whatever you do don't pick at your acne..you might get scaring.
Hope this helps.

It may not be right for you. Call your dermatologist and let them know that as soon as possible, so you don't waste money for nothing. They will find another solution. Finding the right stuff for your face isn't easy, and there are MILLIONS of products on the market that don't work. Contact your dermatologist.

Go back to the dermatologist and tell him it's not working. Or, get a new dermatologist.
My derm also gave me something that really dried out my face... I've just had to start using vaseline as a moisturizer, and it works.

I got accutane from my derm which totally dried out my face, mouth, nose, everything. but i stuck with it and the dryness faded and now i have perfectly clear, soft skin. dryness is a common side effect of must all acne meds. sometimes you just have to stick with them. or try a good moisturizer. the Body Shops Vitamin E Facial Moisturizer is great. Good luck to ya

Stop using the product and tell your doctor it is making your skin dry and if he/she doesn't tell you to stop using it stop going to that person. To tell you the truth I used everything out there before I went to one of those doctors and they didn't help me at all. Every producted I used by the doctor I got really dry skin and I had to put lotion on it.
