It's a sad day in the Morg household, we're running out of everything and it's too cold to go to the grocer's! The only filler I seem to have left for a meatloaf is rice. Should I cook it before adding it to my meatloaf? If not, should I make the meatloaf with a bit more a liquid/loose texture to give the rice the moisture to cook? Or should I just bite the bullet and make some homemade bread to use as a filler? What would you do? (Besides going to the grocer's, of course.)

Depends on how much crunch you want. Uncooked rice insertion is chancey - need more soy sauce, worchesthire, tomato paste to 'ketch-up' & slower cooking time. Can use unsweetened cereals, oats or crackers (baggie & then roller pin crush).

Cook the rice first. If you don't the dry rice will suck the moisture out of your other ingredients and still probably be uncooked.Do not add more liquid to the meatloaf hoping that the rice will absorb the exact amount of liquid you put in.Also,if you have some cheese at home, put a chunk in the center of your meatloaf. It will melt while baking, just wait a few minutes before slicing for everything to rest.

The only things I put in my meatloaf are an egg and seasonings. I would cook the rice first.

I totally understand! never tried rice in a meatloaf, but it sure sounds interesting. i'd cook the rice first though. not so sure it would cook up the same if you added it to the meatloaf first. you make homemade bread? yummmmmmm! you could make that too as a side. ;)

Cook the rice 3/4 of the way done. Wash it before you cook it.
If you have it, chop, very fine onion, garlic, put it in a pan with just enough water to soften them. When the onion is half tender
stir in the rice a cap full of Worcester sauce, let it simmer a few minutes before you add it to the meat!

Add an egg and catchup to the meat along with the rest of your recipe.

sure - go ahead and make the rice first. Ive done it. It's weird, but totally edible! Up the flavorings in the meatloaf, rice is so bland, you'll need extra punch in there.

I used brown Minute Rice and did not cook it first. Put the same amount of rice as I would have breadcrumbs. I liked it this way better - more dense.
