The difference between 480p 1080p is the number of lines which the television uses. Every CRT(cathode ray tube) uses electron guns to shoot beams of color onto an aquaday coating located on the front of the screen. A large and complex magnetic field is used to directionality the guns beam of electrons, the electron gun traces back and forth creating chemical changes in the small dots on the coating known as pixels after it finishes tracing across one direction it will move down one line and trace in the opposite direction. The actual image you see on your TV screen is not actually fixed in place it is made of many lines and after the electron gun colors one pixel and moves onto the next that pixel will begin to fade. The reason you cannot see the pixels fading is because the gun is moving so quickly it is invisible to our naked eye. Why does this relate to your question? 480 and 1080 are the number of lines the guns will trace across therefore a television with 1080 lines of pixels will have a much higher definition image than one with only 480 lines. In fact for this reason a 480 line tv is not actually considered an HDTV because an HDTV image must contain a minimum of 1080 lines. Another feature to view is how fast the TV refreshes old computer monitors refresh at a frequency of 30hz this the same rate as the human eye refreshes for this reason you can only just not see the image refreshing but if you view these monitors with a video camera you will see the lines. Newer models such as LCD TV's refresh at a higher rate, usually 60hz this makes the image look a lot nicer, when you buy an 1080 line television this is especially important. Also make sure you by 1080p or 480p (progressive) and not 1080i or 480i(interlaced). interlaced technology is old and does not produce a very good image the difference is the way the electron gun scans back and forth a progressive television scans each line individually whereas an interlaced television scans every other line resulting in a TV with a resolution closer to 540p than anything else.

Also remember to properly consider the type of television you are purchasing for example LCD televisions will be great for gaming but are not as large as DLP or LCD Projection Televisions consult an expert upon your purchasing date and be sure to tell him what your specific needs are.

yes, there is a difference. The picture is much better, and it is worth the price difference. So you should go for the 1080p tv, and you will definately see a difference.
