ok, I need some information on getting your bellybutton pierced. Not that I am, I want to, but my mom says it's prone to getting infected more easily than other piercings...is this true? Does it hurt bad? How do they do it? Cost? That sort of thing...btw I live in Canada, any sites to refer me to would be great!

I'm considering getting it done purely for my own satisfaction, I NEVER show off my stomach, but I love the concept of it, and 'putting to use' an area of my body that I never do much with anywayz, just a sort of treat for myself i guess. And as for how many piercings I have, I have 2 holes in each ear, and they rarely if ever get infected!

Lets start with basics. Your mother is concerned, so answer her concerns professionally and in a mature fashion.
Have her look at:
http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/What_Parents_Need_To_Know_FAQ
Should help a bit with some tricky questions and common stereotypes. Also, have your mom talk with a professional piercer. If you go to a reputable and smart piercer they will be able to answer all questions fully and intelligently putting your mothers concerns at ease.
Yes is it true that the navel is more likely to get an infection. HOWEVER, infections are easy to avoid with some care for your piercing and the use of common sense.
Pain is relative, but all piercings hurt. To what extent depends on the location of the piercing and how you regester pain. Most people flinch when the navel is pierced. The pain can be equated to an ear lobe piercing or a bee sting. Not that bad, and its done and over with rather quickly. Over the next week or so, the general area will be sore and that is common.
Basic rundown of how the procedure goes can be found here:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aqh2UuzJOzP7WsQpYK6IuPHsy6IX?qid=20061110124223AAKxXxK&show=7#profile-info-a5ff5a4ad041d83871620bc42b5a9b48aa
(If that link doesn't work, let me know and I'll post the whole entry)
Cost will vary based on where you go and the type of jewelry used. Expect to pay anywhere from $35-$60 and you should tip your piercer.

I got my belly pierced about a year ago and it did get infected quite a bit and it's because it's in a place where it can get caught on clothing and everytime that it does it gets a little tear. So, I would suggest carrying around some alcohol swaps so that you can clean it out right away.
What they do is ask you to lie down, they show you the needle so you can see that it's sterile and still in it's package. They clean the area and clamp the skin where the piercing is going to be. In the clamp there's two holes, one on each side of the clamp, that's where the needle goes through.
It didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would, but it did hurt (I won't lie) some girls say that they cried, but I definitely wouldn't take it that far. I paid $35 dollars to get it done and that included the ring

okay! your mom is wrong. its your body that decides what gets infected the most lol. i live in canada and got mine pierced in the tiny town of moose jaw haha. i didn't have one problem with it. KEEP it clean, clean it out with antibacterial soap, twice a day, and DONT touch it. the more you touch it the more infected it gets. i also have my nose peirced, and it hurt wayyyy more than my bellybutton. and trust me im a baby. its more like a pinch. you lay on a table, and they clamp a little bit of skin, it just pinches a tad. you lay back, they say okay on the count of 3 take a breath. you take a breath, and the worst part is over. and trust me your gona laugh at yoourself from being so scared. i did. bring your discman or ipod and crank it up, you wont feel a t hing i promise. i dont know a site that has amazing information.. but im from winnipeg manitoba.. and this is the best place to get piercings done. the cleanest, and the most experienced. nicest guys ever!

I got mine done within the last few weeks. This was my seventh piercing, so i knew there would be some pain involved. Really, it doesn't hurt as much as persay getting your ear cartilage done. They clamp down the skin that is above your navel. They pull it out. They make a dot. Jab a needle through on the count of three and hook the hoop. Really, sounds worse than it feels. The pain comes afterwards. There is constant rubbing on clothing and just throbbing pain for the next week or so. Mine ran 25 bucks and I am quite pleased with it. I will say, out of all of my piercings (tongue, ears, nipples and navel) it is taking the longest to heal. I am all for it, but make sure that you rub neosporin on it and clense it twice a day with antibacterial soap. Do NOT put alcohol on it. it will dry out the piercing and you will be in pain.

It is said to get infected easier but if you keep it clean it should be fine. No swimming. And wash with anti-bacterial soap when you bathe each day. If it looks red make a hot cup of tea and put the tea bag directly on it for about 20 minutes. Some people also recommend sea salts.

as a mum that signed for her daughter to have this done and went with her for the procedure, what we did was hunt around for good clean looking places, asked other people [just like you are doing here] for any recommendations and horror stories, ie places to avoid.
As for getting infected IF this is your first piercing then I would say have some other place done first and see how well you look after that....................from what I have seen of others that got infected it was the playing with it with dirty hands that would have caused it IMO.
My daughter did not even flinch when it was done and still says that it did not hurt, me I could hardly watch.................
As for cost, sorry not a clue for your area but whatever you do do NOT get it done at the cheapest IF it being cheap is the only thing going for it.
As a mum my question to you would be WHY do you want it done...............I personally dont like them very much so my daughter got hers done under the rule that IF I saw it too much then it would be removed if she liked it or not.............my view was that if she was having it done for her self then HER knowing it was there was enough, it did NOT have to be on show for all the world to see.
Take care......hope you get what you want...........

i had my tragus, nostril, tounge, and abdomen button pierced professionally lower back the early/mid 90s while physique piercing first began starting to be greater mainstream. first became into the tummy button. my piercer numbed it with ice so i did no longer sense many of the preliminary ask your self; in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, some hours later i felt the aching (and with the aid of finals!) next got here the tragus. this became into the main painful, to no longer point out you ought to pay attention the crunch of the jewellery dealing with cartilage. my tongue became into next and that they pierced from the backside - up (much less nerve endings below your tongue). no longer as undesirable as you ought to think of, yet anticipate an excellent style of drooling in the process the piercing and swelling for an afternoon or greater. finally the nostril: like all ask your self to the nostril, anticipate the attention on the comparable ingredient of the nostril the place the piercing is to offer some tears. all in all, the terrific way i will describe what the certainly piercing sensation is that this: style of like an fairly heat pinch. examine your physique rings shops. attempt to discover places with stable repeat shopper business enterprise. take the time; you do no longer could get a piercing that comparable day you walk in. get a feeling for what form of individual the piercer is with the help of the fact they finally are dictating what style of journey you have gotten. mine have been very friendly and maximum severely knowledgeable with piercings of their very own... and surely convey a chum who already has some thing pierced for a 2d opinion and greater ethical help (and to help be certain you do no longer hen out) - stable luck and have relaxing!

I did my belly myself. It never got infected and I know where the needle had been. Just make sure you sterilize it first. I actually used a nail, but whatever. It was worth it, just make sure you have a ring handy.
