A female Staffie goes to a max 32 lbs.
I know this is larger than you want but you will not find a better small dog for the family. Staffies are devoted to children.
By the way I dont own one I have an Akita. But I do feel they are the best small dog for the home.

i think that personality depends on the dog rather than the breed.in april we got a new pup as a companion for our other dog. this new pup was a surprise my step dad had been planning and i never knew of it until she arrived one night. she is a stafordshire bull terrier which i always believed wernt v nice dogs and aggressive and cross personalities, i was always a bit scared of them in the past , and when my step dad told me her breed i wasnt impressed even though she was cutest looking little thing. now she is eleven months old and is the gentlest lovely little dog , a total pet and always wants to sleep in our arms and have a cuddle. so she is the very opposite personality to the general opinion of that breed. also my aunt has a labrador who generally are thought of as gentle loving dog. their dog is cranky, will growl, and get cross. also our neighbours yorkshire terrier is also v cranky too and always fighting with other dogs and snarling at kids. so i think dogs within a breed can vary and personality can depend on dog itself rather than breed.
also if u are getting a new dog , keep in mind ur own dogs age as well. when we got new pup earlier in year, her crazy puppiness was too much for my old 17 yr dog, we should have got an older calmer and trained dog as a companion for him. that might also be true for ur young daughter as well. as boisterous pups dont know their own strenght. maybe a dog a yr or 2 old that is already trained and used to children already would be good option.
good luck with it all, having 2 dogs is twice the fun. i loved it !

Definitely look into pugs--they are small, very even-tempered, and GREAT with kids and other dogs. I have never known a mean pug!
My pug LOVES kids and we don't even have kids!
Also, with a pug you will never have to worry about haircuts like a lot of the smaller breeds. Another thing, pugs are not big barkers and when they do bark, it isn't shrill or yappy.
Note: For a smaller pug you will want a female as the males are quite a bit larger than the females.

Why not go to a papillon rescue and get a dog that's used to kids?

Try something different and go for a miniature pinscher, they are a playfull active very small dog,I find them very good with children.
They do get on with other dogs and thrive on lots of T.L.C.

Corgis...
..they get to be 30-35 pounds, but they are the BEST for families and small children.
They will even herd up kids, so children can't run off too far... :)
