I would recommend that you take a beginner course (or lesson) at the resort. Once you have learn the basic in an hour or two will provide you tremendous fun in skiing for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, I learned to ski the hard way, thru friends and ended up skidding more than carving in my intermediate stage.

Take an hour of lesson and you'll benefit a lifetime. Have fun skiing.

I have skied since I was 4 years old. I hope to die on skis. For you....heed the advice of the others (especially the last one before my answer). I also used to ski instruct, and race coach the little kids. Here is my advice:

GET LESSONS.

It is painful to watch people ski without lessons. Even if they survive to the intermediate stage (like the last person said), I can always tell the difference. If you like the sport, you will never advance to "expert" status without the proper fundamentals, and the longer those people go without ever getting the lessons, the harder it is for a ski instructor to fix the problems.

A ski instructor will start you at the basics, you will walk around a lot, get used to the skis, glide on the smallest, tiniest slopes. Until you can:

a) stop

b) control your speed in a wedge (pizza we call it)

c) turn

Only then will they take you to the chairlift, and help you ski down. By then, you will be cruising on your own! Probably slowly, but at least safely.

DO NOT:

* Give in to a group mentality and all head up the first chair you see. That is an accident waiting to happen.

* Let a friend convince you that they can "teach" you. Trust me - they can't.

* Let your boyfriend try to teach you if you don't go tubing with him. That is a relationship ender - guaranteed! If he loves you, he will encourage you to get lessons from a pro!

Spend the extra $30 or whatever, and get the lesson, trust me, it is well worth your money!

If you get lessons, you won't end up in a tree. If you don't get lessons, you may end up at the hospital. I'm just trying to scare you a little - into getting lessons!

If you are athletic, and can rollerblade, then you probably have good balance, which is essential. This will speed the process up.

I remember teaching two guys who were avid water skiers, and they picked up the basics in half the time as the average person. Usually it takes about an hour to get the beginner ready to ride their first chair. Those guys were skiing like intermediates after only one hour with me! I have never had such a great lesson in my life!

Snow skiing is alot like ice skating. You turn the same way, you stop the same way. It's all about shifting you weight from one side to the other. If you've ice skated before you should be able to pick it up pretty easily. I did.

You can actually take a short group lesson before you go. I think the important thing to remember is that if you fall, it's not that bad because the snow cushions your fall. Better to fall on the snow than run in to a tree.

Cascade Mountains - great place for a beginner.
Take a beginners lesson… you will learn to fall & get up (surprisingly important!) .. snow plow… and turning.. You'll be good to go! Have fun.. ;)
