Binge drinking would be a massive night of power drinking...
If you typically have 3 drinks when you go out, but on one particular night, you and your friends went nuts and pounded 10 drinks, you guys went on a "drinking binge" that night.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines BINGE DRINKING as: "drinking five or more drinks at one sitting ." I'm a college student. I do not know anyone who drinks in college and DOESN'T binge drink. I'm not an alcoholic, I go out 2 nights a week. Usually on the weekends though, ($ dollar u call its), I have 5-6 drinks AT the bar. Many of my friends pre-game before we even go out.
I think that consistently binge drinking on a day-to-day basis and to the point that it takes A LOT (12 pack of beer?) to get you drunk would be grounds for alcoholism. If you drink alone, every day, in great quantities, that too may be alcoholism.

A pattern of heavy drinking that occurs during an extended period of time set aside for drinking. Has been described as 5/4 binge drinking: five or more drinks in a row on a single occasion for a man or four or more drinks for a woman.

There is no official, generally accepted definition of binge drinking. It varies. Typically for teens /young adults it's considered 4 or 5 drink on a single occasion. Regardless of how much you drink, if you got sick, did something dangerous, or can't remember what the hell you did, that's likely a binge under anyone's defination.

It's people who drink a large abundance of alcohol, but may not do otherwise consistently throughout time. For example, teenagers and college students may not drink at all during the week (for example I said) and will 'binge' on the weekend, and drink excessively.

The British Medical Association states that "there is no consensus on the definition of binge drinking. In the past, 'binge drinking' was often used to refer to an extended period of time, usually two days or more, during which a person repeatedly drank to intoxication, giving up usual activities and obligations."
The International Center for Alcohol Policies says that diverse definitions of binge drinking exist. "Within the field of epidemiology, for example, there is disparity regarding the amount of alcohol that needs to be consumed in order to qualify as a 'binge'. One of the commonly used thresholds for 'binge' drinking is 5 or more drinks for men and 4 or more for women per occasion. This definition has gained a foothold within the social sciences literature and has influenced media reporting of drinking behavior."
It explains that "the clinical definition of a binge, as the other hand, is characterized by the consumption of alcohol to intoxication, usually a solitary and self-destructive activity lasting up to several days and involving a loss of control. Epidemiological definitions generally refer to much shorter drinking episodes but do not quantify binge drinking adequately."
The British Medical Association concludes that "in common usage, binge drinking is now usually used to refer to heavy drinking over an evening or similar time span - sometimes also referred to as heavy episodic drinking. Binge drinking is often associated with drinking with the intention of becoming intoxicated and, sometimes, with drinking in large groups."
It is sometimes associated with physical or social harm.

Binge drinking is like you go for weeks or however long without drinking anything and then you just go nuts and drink like it is your job until you black out or whatever and some people keep on going after that!

Alcaholics tend to drink through out the day to the point of staying tipsy or drunk 90% of the time. Binge drinkers go to alot of parties and just drink to trashed (or twisted as I like to say) and don't care how small the party is or what the party is for.
