building. Our hearth has always been too small. We want to use the Malachite, it would be so impressive but I need to know if malachite is strong enough to handle the heat and pressure of being walked on. We know how to install it, I'm just questioning the stone itself.

Malachite is a soft mineral that can be carved, so I'm not so sure it would make a good hearth stone. It would be susceptible to scratching and gouging easily. Use it to make a coffee table instead.

i think malachite may be too soft and heat-sensitive--but consult an expert about this. also, watch out for edges and corners--malachite can be razor-sharp if broken or jagged
