The following is stated on the Neutrogena FAQ board:

The ingredients in Neutrogena products have been proven safe historically, so instead of using laboratory animals to assess the safety of its formulations, Neutrogena performs a number of predictive tests in humans. However, since there is always the possibility of a regulatory requirement due to the discovery of an important new compound that might require expanded safety testing, Neutrogena does not wish to preclude the possibility that it will ever use lab animals in product safety tests.

I am still young and unfortunatley cannot understand this type of dialouge. Call me "retarded" or "idioutic" if you wish, but I need to know the question above.

It's a gray area. Neutragena can claim they do not condone testing on animals for their products, but there is nothing to keep them from funding someone else that might carry out the testing. This is unfortunately done by many companies that want to preserve their name.

Of course, they always have the option of performing animal testing, so they don't want to close off that possibility in case they ever need to. That's why the "no animal testing" tag on products is small and usually on the back. It's not the selling point, but it appeals to the small market that is interested. It's very unfortunate, but true.

You are not retarded or idiotic, and I applaud you for your forward thinking. You have shown great maturity by exploring the "legalese" that many corporations use.

Excellent question, thank you.

It means that they almost always use ingredients that are already known to be safe to humans, so there's no need to test their products on animals, however they are reserving the right to change their mind if a new chemical or compound is discovered and needs to be tested to see if it's safe.

Either that, or they've been bought out by John Kerry, and their new policy is "We voted against animal testing before we voted for it."

It means Neutrogena has had people volunteer for product testing.

It's not sick or wrong. People go in with the risk of an allergic reaction (rash) or a possible break out. It's just a way to find out what effect the product has on skin.

Yes, it is used on humans....but at their discretion, they may use on animals.
