I mean it when I ask it. It kind of gives them the opening to respond again to me. If you are not sure, write back nicely and keep it shorter.

I'm of the mind that they do want answer....if they took the time to ask the question. And yes, they're being nice by asking. Nothing wrong with that at all.
The answer can be as brief or as broadly detailed as you see fit, but do answer.

It just depends on the individual. I hate when I ask someone how they are and they respond with "Do you really care?".
Just be polite, answer the question and don't worry about their intentions.

I mean it when I ask it. And even if they don't, it would be acceptable to answer, since they asked. Just keep it brief if it seems like they don't really care. You're just giving them what they asked for.
