if you had to pick ONE and only ONE firearm for survival purposes
which caliber would you get? think both hunting and protection.
make and model are okay to list but not really required, just the
caliber is fine. I want to know what YOU would get not what you
think of someone elses choice.

.22 can carry a lot of ammo, not to loud, and can shoot it well, ammo readily available

I would prefer a .30/06 or a .308, if the .308 M14/M1a or if the .30/06 a bolt or semi-auto.

In my neck of the woods a shotgun would get you no where. People can shoot you at 300yds, there are hardly no bears and if there are the .30/06 works for grizzlies. Also deer shots are 150yds+. Plus if you do find civilization and maybe they aren't too friendly or you are enemy of the state, .30/06 ammo is everywhere. Plus you will be able to take them out at 400+. You can take out a javelina or coyote or mountain lion. Javelina would probably the first thing you would find to eat, and probably the last thing after you ate it, that you would want to eat again!!! Doesn't taste too good after you smell it dead and gutted and also the normal ways to prepare meat, just don't do it justice. Chili is good or taco meat, or stew, heavily seasoned.
Just something to consider when you are stranded in the southwest, although I would probably eat it with nothing in my belly for days. Which might happen because javelina are everywhere and deer aren't.

Mountains and flat desert an .30/06. .223/12gauge won't get you anywhere. But east or the midwest I can see how that would work.

I think that I would want more info, as to what I am trying to survive. If I was I in Botswana, I might want a Drilling ( 12 ga x 12 ga over .30-06). Were I to be stuck in Nicaragua, I may opt for my FN/FAL (7.62 NATO). If it were simply a case of being marooned in Massachusettes I could muddled thru with a Savage Model 24 (.22 over 12 ga)

That would have to be the most versatile firearm I can think of. It would be a shotgun capable of shooting both bird shot, buck shot (for defense) and slugs (for larger game).

I already own a 12 gauge Remington 870 pump w/rifled barrel and rifle sights. I would simply acquire a secondary, smooth bore barrel for this shotgun if I could only keep just one firearm.

I have to agree with the idea of the 12 guage. Remington Pump with a saddle and extended tube.

12 gauge shotgun. You can shoot birds,or you can shoot deer,or even people.Simply change the type of shell in the gun.It doesnt get much more simple than that! You could probably put down a bear or a moose with a rifled slug, but I never did it personally.

+1 for 30/30 lever action

I would go with the old trust worthy Winchester lever action 30/30.
Our ancestors survived just fine for years with them.
