There's really no way of tip toe-ing around the whole conversation. Be up front with her about it and tell her what & how you've been feeling. You should have her set up an appointment for you with a psychologist if you both feel it might help you after talking. (You don't necessarily need a psychiatrist unless you need meds, which a psychologist can help you determine.)

Mom could find out if you start acting differently and would probably approach you if she felt worried.

My parents didn't find out until I told them...4 years later when I hit rock bottom. I was very good at hiding it as well as being in denial about it. No one EVER caught on because I made sure to always be happy when I was around others. When I finally told my parents, it was rough because they didn't understand it all. With all the information out there about depression, it's a lot easier to get help for it and there's more info that you can research. That's why it's important to catch it while it's still in the "beginning stages" so you can address the issue.

The only way that anyone can "really" tell you if there is any imbalance is if they scan your brain.

A psychiatrists job is to listen to you and through that see whether or not something is "off" based on what they tell you, so if you end up at one, be sure to tell the truth about EVERYTHING so that they can help with diagnosing you as well as figuring out which type of med can help balance everything out.

First step be honest with your mom, I'm sure she notices changes in your behavior and sleep paterns. Just tell her you don't feel "right". A psycholigist can help you with the therapy part and if you need meds then they can send you to a psychaitrist for the meds aspect. Before any doc worth their salt perscribes meds they do a blood work up with all kinds of different panels. If you think it may be a hormone imbalance talk with your regular doc and have him/her run some blood work on you.

They can tell that you have depression and they can have tests run on your brain like MRIs to determine if the chemicals in your brain are imbalanced. They can say that your chemicals are not balanced and you need medicine to fix the imbalance but they really can't prove that until the tests are done. I'm not really good at explaining this, sorry. Medicines are supposed to fix the imbalanced chemicals in your brain and psychiatrists prescribe these medicines. Be straight with your mom. She might not know. She will be able to help you pay for your medicines which will be really expensive.

There is common symptoms like tiredness, mood swings, feeling of helplessness, negativity, lack of sleep, etc of hunger etc. If you have these over a period of time you may be a good candidate of mental depression. You should tell your mom that you fear that you are under a lot of stress and want to see a professional.

If you think you have depression, you just might.
You do need to see a doctor for an evaluation.
