I am just wondering. I know that it is an organ that the body no longer uses. What is it's original purpose?

Actually, the body does use the gall bladder. I believe you are confusing it with the appendix.

The gall bladder store bile between meals. Bile is ejected from the gall bladder into the intestine in response to eating. Bile is important in the absorption of fat and fat soluble vitamins, A, D,and E. However, you can live just fine without your gall bladder.

Gall bladder function was probably really critical when people were luck to eat several times a week and efficient absorption of nutrients was crucial. However, in modern times most of us eat on a daily basis and are not harmed by a continuous flow of bile into the intestine.

A few people that have their gall bladder removed will get diarrhea as a side effect, but it is usually mild and temporary.

The gallbladder stores bile, which is released when food containing fat enters the digestive tract, stimulating the secretion of cholecystokinin (CCK). The bile emulsifies fats and neutralizes acids in partly digested food.

After being stored in the gallbladder, the bile becomes more concentrated than when it left the liver, increasing its potency and intensifying its effect on fats. Most digestion occurs in the duodenum.
