I have a cockatiel and you can teach birds to talk a variety of ways.

I was home a lot, so whenever I was around his cage (which was pretty often) I would stand around repeating the phrase I wanted to teach him. Also, male birds are typically better talkers. I would spend about 3 minutes just repeating the phrase. It has to be something they can "say" (they actually whistle) easily, so try stuff with a lot of "s" sounds and open syllables (syllables that end with vowels). For example, my bird says "wassup Smokey?"

The other method is to record yourself and use some digital editing software to make it loop and play the file for the bird all day long. Or you could do it less high-tech and just speak into a tape recorder and play the tape for the bird.

By repeating the same word over and over to him/her.
If you don't have the time or the patience for this, there are recordings available that you can buy.

I have a Monk Parakeet and he says about 6 different things!

Have fun

Aww you are so lucky. We have one as well, although they are more well known as Quaker Parrots, they really are not parakeets. ANyhow ours is about 7 months old. We have had her about 4 months. SHe is awesome. She really just repeats things we say. She says about 6 things laughs, kisses, kissy sounds and screams. (I know we shouldnt have taught her that but it is so super cute) Her first words were step up. Then she just caught on after that. We hear her in her cage at night when the cover is on and she talks to herself, like she is practicing. I have read that birds, well quakers maybe only, talk more when they think or no one is listening. There is a great and education forum, called quaker parros. I have provided you the link below. Have a great time with you fid (feathered kid)

I've been successful by saying a phrase over and over and with some phrases to associate with real meanings. For example: " I want a shower, please." If this is said, I give him a bath. Be really enthusiastic. That really helps. The bird will try harder. When mine says something new, he gets a treat. (Sunflower Seed) works very well. Work with your bird for 15-20 minutes a day. Lots of praise and repetition . I hope this helps.Have a nice holiday.
