what is the best way to create volume and waves in a mans hair without using heated appliances, his hair is about shoulder length, it appears to be very lank and untidy, My friend has suggested trimming his hair to remove split ends and putting some layers in it to give it more volume, She has also suggested that he should also get me to give him a roller set to give his hair more volume, and waves

if he does not want to cut his hair try roller setting it. it should help to give his hair more volume

if his hair is that bad he needs a hair cut to remove all of the split ends from it and have some layers put through it to give it more body.
I do not think that he will agree with the roller setting of his hair though
