If i turn up at the airport for a standby flight, will i typically get a cheaper flight than if I book in advance?

It depends where you are flying from and to as a lot of the airlines no longer sell standby seats. However some of the charter companies still do. If you can book weeks in advance and get a good deal take it as nine times out of ten that is the cheapest way, however if it is the middle of the summer holidays and nothing is coming up then ring the airline of where you want to go to and ask if they do standbys. I spend my working days putting people on standby however it isn't much fun waiting around and if you have a specific route in mind you may have to wait a while!

Actually you can't fly "standby" status any more unless you already have a ticket. Standby used to mean you could show up at the airport without a ticket and take whatever hasn't sold yet but with all the security changes, you can't get close enough to the gate to declare standby status any more--- no more last minute cheap fares. If you want to purchase a ticket at the airport on the day of flight, you better be prepared to pay; airlines usually charge the higest fares on the day of flight. That's where they make all their profit.
