Three months ago I adopted a Jack Russell Terrier mix and he is about 4 years old. For some reason he doesn't associate being outside with pooping! He never pees in the house, infact, he'll hold it and ask to go outside to do this!
He's responded very well to all the other tricks I've taught him, I just can't get him to eliminate outside. I've tried crate training, taking him out every half an hour, giving him all the praise & treats in the world on the few times when he goes outside. If I catch him going inside, I instantly pick him up and take him outside.
I do try to watch him every second, but he's able to leave my sight, poop, and return without my even knowing he left.
I don't know if he just doesn't like going outside, if he doesn't like going on a leash, or just doesn't get the association. He has a sister who is completly potty trained. Please Help!

And, please, no ignorant "rub his nose in it" or other stupid borderline abusive answers.

Have you tried a set feeding - pooping schedule? My dogs poop between 630 and 730am then again between 530pm and 630pm. And on the weekends (when we're home all day feeding treats and snacks) they poop one more time before bed, usually around 10pm.

Having a routine helps alot! Try controlling his food intake and pay attention to how long it takes for him to defecate after eating. Base your schedule on that for starters.

Good luck!

u should rub his nose in it... JUUUUST Kidding

i'm no expert.. but here is my opinion

make sure that clean all spot in the house well where he goes #2. no scents.. nothing like that.. i use nature's miracle .. does the job for me.

since ur dog is 4 now.. u probably have some feeding schedule now. typically dogs eliminate themselves right after eating.. so u should feed him, and then take him out.

while the dog is doing his "job" say "go poop" or whatever u like
when the dog is done.. say "nice dog" and give a treat.

supposedly he should associate "go poop" with going #2 and then getting a treat..

but keep in mind.. since u just adopted this dog.. it may also be stress related

key is. dont give up and stay consistent. one day he'll get it

good luck

And the place do you advise I placed the litterbox it relatively is sufficiently vast for my 70 and 85lb canines? it may be the dimensions of a love seat! and admittedly, *I* do no longer could go exterior while it rains and snows so as that my canines can do away with because of the fact I actually have a fenced lower back backyard. even once I did no longer and that i did could go out with the canines that's unlike i've got not got a stable water-resistant or winter jacket. while the climate's undesirable maximum canines do no longer choose to spend any further holiday in it than you accomplish that as that they do their business enterprise without postpone. And particularly frankly, i admire the snow so i actually do no longer innovations going out in it. I even have prevalent countless canines who have been litterbox or paper experienced and would not for the existence of them visit the bathing room exterior. yet litterbox coaching isn't reasonable for any dogs that weighs better than approximately 15-20lbs and that regulations out a extensive area of the dogs inhabitants.

This is a cosistecy issue. If you see him getting ready too pick him up and take him out. always put him in the same spot. If he poops and you find it. Get a papertowel and take him and the poop out to the same spot. It may take a while but if you are persistant it will work.

And don't forget to reward him when he does poo outside,.

I would ask your vet. He could possibly be sick or something that is causing him to do this. Possibly it is just the stress of moving to a new house that he isn't use to. Have you tried any of those puppy pads. You might try those and see if he will at least use them if he insists on going inside.
