Every year we go through the same thing!
My hubby secures it to the wall with wire (around the trunk) and eye hooks. I started squirting them with water from a spray bottle last year. That seemed to work, as I only had to do it twice this year (2 cats). They stopped climbing up the tree, but I can't stop them from batting at the ornaments on the bottom branches.
We also put catnip in a bag and hung it from a doorknob. They're playing with that instead of the tree. ( at least for now)
Good luck & try the spray bottle!

I am wondering the same thing. I didn't buy a tree yet, because I need to get a really solid and weighty stand this year. We have 2 kittens (~ 11 mos old) and I plan to decorate the tree with non-breakable ornaments and garlands. Also, I bought new lights for the tree - LED ones. They won't stop cats from chewing on wires or trying to pull on them, but if they fall, they are covered in plastic.

This is a very easy fix. Orange citrus air freshener.. Cats hate the smell of citrus. Spray it in moderation "NO ONE NEEDS TO BE CHOKING" Caution: it expands quickly. I spray a little a few times daily directly on the tree; This keeps my Christmas tree free from my cat climber!! I also use it in other areas of the house I don't want my sweet kitty invading. This has also helped with clawing the couch. NOTE: Never Spray Directly Towards Your Cat; THIS WILL CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES. Good Luck

I have been putting up a small table top tree. Mia (my cat doesn't even care about it) I don't know if this is because the tree is so small or my Mia is lazy. She is a very lazy cat. But really cats and Christmas trees well most cats can't resist playing with them. Next time try a small tree.

I am an animal lover and an owner of two cats. Try spraying the tree with Lysol. That's what I do to keep Smokey away from the tree and making a mess at night.

I don't think you can. Unless you want to just try the old tried-and-true method...when she gets close to it, squirt her with a squirtgun.
Otherwise it's just curiousity and because the tree is unusual in her world. Plus it's dark and has places to hide, smells nice, and moves when she is in there.
After years and many cats, I just don't put the fragile ornaments on (unless they are secured well) and live with it. It's kinda cool to see the kitties having some fun during the holidays.
