Only a few airlines offered on-board wifi access to passengers on long-haul flights, SAS and Lufthansa among them. The service was provided by a subsidiary of Boeing, and it is being discontinued in January due to high costs.

The new airbus airplane offers internet access. Also some recent boeing planes have been modified by the carriers to offer internet access. I was able to surf the internet on a recent trip to Hong Kong from LA on Cathay Pacific. However, it appears that this service has been discontinued on their flights for some reason. Mostly it seems like it is only available on long haul flights (flights over 10 hours).

You cannot use the internet, but i personally dont think that any of today's devices mess with the air lines equipment, but it's more of the errors it would cause with the network on the ground.
CDMA phones would see too many towers at once, and it would confuse both the phone and the network, TDMA-based technologies (GSM, iDen, TDMA, etc..) would not make it back in time to the tower to hit the timeslot, which would cause lost data packets anywyays..

Yes but only a few airlines provides that service. Internet is available only on Boeing planes because they have this thing "Connection by Boeing" u can find more info on the link below http://www.connexionbyboeing.com
Japan Airlines (JAL) operates that kind of service.

On airliners you can not use the Internet on your computer, you are also not allowed to use your cell phones. http://www.tsa.gov/
