As tony99 said above, Bangkok is a polluted, dirty, dusty, and hot city. It is fair to add smelly and noisy. AND THEN on your flight back home after your stay there, I am very much sure you will be definitely planning your next trip back to Thailand.
Am I right, tony?
Well, back to the topic. There are lots of online hotel booking sites.
Here are some of them. Read the reviews or feed backs from
the guests actually stayed. They are great reference for you when you pick up your hotel.

well I Must disagree with the last person.
Yes Bangkok is very polluted. It is definitely dirty, maybe a little dusty, but then it is a hot country.
To find dirty places go to any city in America or Britain. The street are covered in litter and the building are covered in graffiti. The Thai are proud of their city and do not drop little on the street. It is against the law as well.
The vast majority of hotels are cheap and clean. There are many links on the Internet to find a hotel of your choice. It depends on what you price range is.
Do not book into a motel, in Thailand these are rooms that can be booked by the hour, I am sure you can guess what for.
Enjoy your time here and enjoy the people. But go outside of the big cities to Find the traditional Thailand.
Beautiful place, Beautiful people.

Business Inn Soi 11/1 and Sukhumvit Road is 650 baht per night. Nice and clean, right in the center of it all. I was just there last week when a friend from Holland stayed there and he said it was very enjoyable.
You can rent rooms one night at a time as well. Rent for a day or two, go out of town for couple days, come back and rent for few more days etc. Also has travel/tours on first floor in the lobby in you want to arrange River Kwai, Tiger Temple or anything else.
When in Thailand, a place to sleep and take a shower is all you need. The rest of the time you will be on the go, go, go
The Business Inn for the price would be hard to beat.

There are PLENTY of cheap and clean hotels in Bangkok. It really depends on your budget, but the REALLY REALLY cheap ones - well, remember - you get what you pay for!
There are many sites you can try and the previous answers have listed them.
Personally I use http://www.sawadee.com/
then follow the link to the Bangkok section
very fast and realiable
It also has unbiased reviews from people who have stayed in the hotel you are looking at. That is a very useful feature to help you decide which one you want to book.
Have good trip.

I always stayed at the Four Sons Inn on Rambutri Rd, right next to Kho Sarn Rd. For 500 Baht/night ($13), you get air con, satellite TV, nice bed, and a quiet room. Make sure to take the Kho Sarn Rd. shuttle bus from the airport if you want to save some cash. It's only 100 Baht, I think. Happy travels!

whenever i fly into BKK late in the evening and don't want to waste a night at a nicer hotel, I check into Asia Hotel (Bangkok) first before checking into my other hotel the next morning. Asia Hotel is pretty OK for the price that you are going to pay, but the service is really hit or miss. Food (room-service) is OK, but for some reason every time i check-out the agents seem to be pissed at something (or someone, or maybe at me).

I recommend going to a travel agent or looking online and booking through a reputable travel company. When I stayed in Bankok, I booked my hotel reservation through Northwest Vacations. They had great prices and the hotel was nice. I'd give you the name of it if I remembered it. Most reputable companies are picky about the hotels they offer.
I hope you're not staying in Bankok long. It's really a dirty, polluted city. Much like how it was described in the song 'One Night in Bankok' by Murray Head. Other areas of Thailand are much nicer.
Good Luck!

use the web to find a hotel, there are heaps of good cheap places.
Bangkok is dirty, busy, hot, humid with appalling traffic.
However it is one of the most interesting cities in the world.
Been twice and loved every minute.
