Yes and no. Merlot is a red grape that is often made into red wine called "Merlot". However, the Merlot grape can also make a blush, "White Merlot".

If you simply say "Red Wine", it could be one of any number of red grapes or red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Petite Syrah, Sangiovese, Malbec, Grenache, and a whole host of others, or even a blend.

So, if you want a Merlot, ask for a Merlot. Don't expect a red wine that's given to you to be a Merlot. : )

Merlot is softer tasting than Cabernet Sauvignon due to having less tannins. It is a smooth, dry red wine. Merlot is often described as having the flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, herbs, and mocha.

Food Pairing with Wine Merlot is best with poultry and grilled meats, but these types of wines actually goes well with most foods.

Merlot originates from Bordeaux in France where it is the most commonly planted grape. You can find many great Merlots from California, Oregon, and Washington.

Some of my favorite Merlot wines are:

Bonterra 2004 Organically Grown Merlot -
Casa Lapostolle 2004 Cuvee Alexandre Merlot -
Columbia Crest 2003 Grand Estates Merlot -
Hogue 2003 Genesis Merlot -
Twomey 2002 Merlot
Twomey 2003 Merlot -
William Hill 2003 Merlot -

Merlot is a grape variety.

The Merlot grape is a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon in many respects. It is lower in tannins and makes wines that mature faster and are softer in texture. Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in order to soften the blend. At its best, Merlot makes a wine that is dry, rich in flavor and smooth as it finishes in your throat. At its worst, Merlot makes wine that is dry but thin in taste and texture, and not very pleasant to consume. Most of what you will come across are likely to be of pretty good quality.

Merlot is a light red wine. It's generally the preferred red wine for people who are not big wine drinkers, and who would prefer something less heavy and more fruity.

Merlot is a type of red wine. Other reds are Cabernet, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir, just to name a few. Main white wines would include Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Reisling. Then there are blush wines, which typically fall under the red wine catagory, but are lighter in both flavor and color. Most commonly known is White Zinfandel.
