I want to to buy a cordless phone and I have it narrowed down to two. They are both analog but have a corded base as well. Will using the corded base for more private calls be safer than using the cordless phone?

Yes. If you use the corded base, usually just a speakerphone, it will not transmit your conversation over the air like is done when you're using the cordless part. Digital, DSS or the new DECT cordless phones can't be heard by scanners like analog ones can. If you get one of those, you could use the cordless part without worry, too.
