I had 4 of my wisdom teeth removed 16 days ago, and my surgeon told me not to chew hard foods for 4-5 weeks following surgery, because the weakened jaw bone can be accidentaly broken. Now I am afraid to chew at all. A piece of boiled cauliflower that wasn't soft enough crunched in my teeth and nearly made me to believe that I've got a jaw fracture already. I know it sounds silly, but... Does a person really know when he or she gets a jaw fracture?

That wasn't enough to do it.

Huh. When I had my wisdom teeth removed (all 4 at once), the dentist told me to eat soft foods (i.e., jello, pudding, soup) after the surgery, then shift back to my normal eating patterns. Since I could not eat the night before, I was starving. The jello diet lasted for 1 day, but I did make sure my meats and chunky vegetables were cut into tiny pieces to minimize chewing. My mouth was sore and it hurt a lot if a piece of food was chewed between the upper and lower jaw where the teeth were removed.

The question may be how deeply your teeth were impacted. If the dentist had to cut deeply into your jaw to remove the teeth, then it may be weaker. Call him back and ask what he considers "hard" foods.

Who's cooking your cauliflower? I smell a lawsuit here. Just kidding - It's not the impact of the food as much as the torque in your jaw that can stress the weakened parts sorrounding the teeth. I highly doubt you are in danger of breaking your jaw, but do try to stick to SOFT foods, and keep those holes clean. You really have to respect your doctors orders, but unless you have osteo-porosis, you can probably gamble on cauliflower being OK. Just cook it a little longer. And relax a little.

My wisdom teeth removal experience was hell. Was bleeding from my mouth for a full day, had all 4 removed at same time. Couldn't eat anything remotely hard for atleast 2 weeks. I lost a couple pounds which was nice. Yeah, it hurts badly if you even touch your jaw, just keep ice on the jaw for a week or until swellin goes down.

I know how you feel but you should know if your jaw is weak. It will feel different and you will probably have sharp pains in certain places. Since your already into your third week I would recommend to start to eat firmer foods. Also you need to chew gum it helps strengthen for jaw and it massages where the wisdom theeth once were. A hard food that I would recomend is potato chips they arnt hard enoght to break your jaw but its a way to work up to other foods.

i think it would hurt a lot if you actually fractured your jaw...but you could always call him.

btw your jaw isn't that much weaker... i had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed and never got this advice by one of the best oral surgeons in a major city. in my opinion, he only said that cuz he's just afraid of being sued really in the 1/million chance something did happen.... unless you have incredibly fragile bones and a very stretched out jaw, i dont see why it would be at risk.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth out at once also and I was eating normally again in a week and a half. you just have chew with your mouth closed slighly smaller than normal. After about a week, you should try chewing things like steak and chicken in order to strenghten your jaw again, it will feel like you cannot open you jaw all the way, don't panic, just slowly stretch it back out.

Each person is different but, its been 2 weeks and 2 days.. it is time to start training your mouth to eat regular food again. If you dont, you will continue to eat Jello until your 95yrs old. If its a issue about hungar, there are many things that you can blend and great shakes available, however, If after all this time, you're stilll in pain you should see a dentist to make sure all is still in tact. dont wait another two weeks.
