all you need is a signed statement of transfer(both parties) with date of sale and serial number of gun. statement only needs to say that you have legally transferred ownership of firearm (give description here) serial # to buyer(state name of buyer here) on this date. have you and new owner sign. I would get some sort of id number, be it a drivers license or other legal id number of buyer so there is a way to prove transfer. anyone can fake a receipt, you want to be able to prove you sold to legitimate buyer. then retain copy for the rest of your life. do not loose it or let it get destroyed.

You can take a copy of the bill of sale to your local sheriff's office and have it recorded, but keep the original where you can find it so that if something happens, you have proof. Our local SO does it for free but asks that we write down the buyers social security number and drivers license number.

I'm not aware of any requirement to notify anyone when I sell a firearm, unless some new law was passed while I slept last night.
All I have to do is know exactly who I sold it to, in case they come knocking on my door about it being found and suspected of being used in a crime.

Take it to someone with a Federal Firearms license, like a legitimate gun store. They will have the necessary paperwork. There MAY be a fee involved, but you might not have to pay it - the buyer might, but I'm not sure on that one.

i am most positive yo dont have to do anything when doing a private sale.
for your own protection though it is wise to record the date and time
and person you sold it too. it would also be wise to make sure thier
drivers lisc. list them as over 21 and its current and valid for YOUR
state.
but like someone mentioned you could contact the BATF. or even
your local police dept.

you NEED to go to your local police department and get a doccument of ownership transferred to the person. The person who is taking over the said firearm will need to be present so that the can get it registered right away

I would contact the ATF (Alcohol, Tobbaco and Firearms) in your area and ask, they may have a form to fill out.
