I would say that people in you rarea are so used to drinking carbonated beverages, that it has become their one and only "drink." Thus, when they think of a drink, nothing comes to their mind but sodas.

people in my area call everything coke. even if its dr pepper. if theres pepsi in the fridge, we say, get me a coke. wierd.

i say they use some type of slang where you come from you just havent paid attention. Everyone everywhere does start saying it like soda and everyone else will quickly pick that up
