I have a 14 week old female chihuahua, who has recently developed a severe rash in both her ears. There is no odor or discharge, coming from the ears, but they are extremely itchy! She is still on the same food she was on since weaning her. She's eating Purina One Healthy Puppy Formula and has never has a problem before now. Could they become allergic to a food if they have been eating it since weaning started? I spoke to my veterinarian about it to see if she should be seen, and she said that it's probably some kind of an allergy and to use some Benedryl Cream on her ears, and she said it was safe. She also said it could be when she gets excited that it happens. She said if it's not better in a few days to bring her in. I just wanted to get another opinion on how I can help my little girls discomfort, and maybe an idea of what might be causing it. This morning I noticed rashes also develping behind her ears. Have any of you experienced this problem and how did you solve it? Thanks

She has ear mites and needs to be dipped at the vets.

Royal Canin is a good food... all high quality foods are good, but not all fit each dog. Let me say that I am practically an expert on allergies (my dog almost died from a mixture of food and evironmental allergies at a very young age- so the vets weren't taking allergies into consideration, and it was allergies!). A rash that appears and suddenly disappears in a short period of time sounds like an environmental allergy to me. If this happens often, try giving benadryll (a small amount as your dog is small) to your dog. See if this problem arises during the duration of them being on the benadryll. If not, chances are that it's environmental. Also pay close attention to the things your dog has touched in the area of the rash. For example, my dog is allergic to grass (among MANY other things) and the grass will cause a major rash just by brushing over it... and if he lays on it the skin will actually scab. If you have any questions feel free to contact me through yahoo or my pet community. I would be more than happy to share anything I've gone through if it can help you out.

When you mention "inside" the ear I am assuming you mean underneath the outside of the ear and not the ear canal itself. If this isn't the case then just ignore this post. If it is the case then I have been through what you have been and the Benedryl works but it takes awhile and it may reoccur. I have 2 Chihuahuas myself and one has the same problem you described (I think) and the other does not. I kept it lathered on several times a day and it was completely gone in about 3 weeks.

I second Coach's answer. The way to tell is to rub her ears gently at the base of the ear on the back side. If she leans heavily into your touch, she's definitely got ear mites and the vet can prescribe a special cream to get rid of them.
