It depends. We don't send our spayed animals home with a cone. Usually the first day (the day of the surgery) they're sleepy and don't care much about anything.

You can leave it on for a day or two, then take it off and see if she's bothering the site. Licking is a natural process for them, it helps with the itching and such. Unless she's really gnawing at it, I wouldn't worry about it. I've had 5 females spayed and not one of them infected the site, if that helps.

If in doubt, call the vet back and ask his opinion.

Hmmm...I have always had all my cats spayed, and that is 7 cats...Never once did the vet put on a cone when I got them back. That is 3 different vets also. Interesting that your vet does...guess there is nothing wrong with it, but I bet it bugs the heck out of the cat.

I would call and ask the vet...maybe there is something special about the surgery the way they did it, but I wouldn't think it would need to be on there more than a couple days tops.

Like I said, all my cats have come home without a cone, and none have ever had any complications from the spay (well, except for not being able to get pregnant afterwards for some reason ;) )

Give the incision site a few days to heal. If you take it off too soon she will lick and bite at the glue/stitches. I would say a day or 2! You can cut the cone down if she has trouble eating or drinking.

If the vet didn't tell you exactly then I would leave it on 7-10 days. That gives the site time to heal. Trust me cats and dogs WILL lick the site if they can get to it. Also if not already doing so use shredded newspaper or Yesterday's news brand litter in her litter box so no kitty litter gets in the incision.

Atleast 3 days to insure proper healing time.
