Many good free versions out there.
Spybot Search and Destroy is very good and one of the free programs that include real time scanning.
AdAware is good. The free version does not include real time scanning, but is very good at getting rid of spyware and adware already on your PC
AVG free anti spyware is also very good. When you first install it is the full version. After 30 days it turns into a more limited but still useful free version. The free version does not have real time scanning.
Spyware Blaster will help prevent spyware infestations.
McAfee Site advisor puts a button on the Internet Explorer tool bar that changes from green to red when you enter a bad website. It also highlights the results in google searches to avoid going to a bad website.
Using a combination to these free tools will help keep you adware and spyware free.
Please look at the last link before trying Hitman Pro mentioned in the above answer

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

i exploit AdAware and SpyBot seek and wreck and have had no problems with them. Avast anti-virus is stable, as is AVG unfastened. I artwork with a non-income, and our finished workplace is secure with the help of this mind-blowing unfastened utility. in case you opt for SpyBot, make certain you get the the terrific option one. SpyBot seek and wreck is the the terrific option one. there is yet another one with a incredibly comparable call which will run a unfastened test and then value you to do away with issues. the genuine SpyBot seek and wreck is thoroughly unfastened, for the two scanning and eliminating. are not getting tricked with the help of an impostor! stick to the training intently. i will additionally advise Firefox. We use that, too.
