A noise filter is used when engine noise (alternator or ignition system) causes interference to the audio system. An indication of this is actually hearing the frequency of the engine noise rise when the engine accelerates. They are usually connected between the fuse block (battery) and the radio. The best type for this application are the inductive type.

Ground loop isolators are also a type of noise filter and are used in-line with the RCA connections going to an amplifier.

Proper grounding will reduce these types of noise but may not get rid of them entirely.
